MDS Scaffolding Guardrails – Rails: Selection Criteria and Best Installation Practices

Garde-corps d’échafaudage bien le choisir et bien l’installer

On scaffolding, guardrails are the first line of defence against falls from height. Often overlooked when everything goes smoothly, they become vital at the slightest misstep. Yet they are also among the components most frequently removed, moved or forgotten during construction work. Here is how to choose the right guardrails, install them correctly and ensure they remain in place.

The role of guardrails on scaffolding

Installed around the perimeter of each working platform, guardrails serve two essential purposes:
* preventing people from falling, whether due to slipping, losing their balance or making an unexpected movement;
* containing tools and materials to protect people working or passing below.
They provide continuous protection without requiring any action from the worker, making them a particularly reliable form of collective fall protection.

The components of a scaffolding guardrail

A complete guardrail system consists of several components, all of which are essential:
* the top rail, positioned at chest height, which prevents a person from falling forward;
* the intermediate rail, which fills the gap between the top rail and the platform to prevent anyone from slipping underneath;
* the toe board, installed along the edge of the platform, which prevents tools and small materials from falling;
* the uprights, securely attached to the scaffolding structure to ensure the stability and rigidity of the entire system.
Removing even one of these components, however briefly, creates a gap in the protection system.

Which types of guardrails are suitable for different needs?

Depending on the site configuration, several solutions are available:
* inside-mounted guardrails, which allow protection to be installed from the level below without exposing workers to the risk of falling during installation;
* removable guardrails, which are practical for scaffolding that is frequently assembled and dismantled;
* end guardrails and return guardrails, which protect the ends and corners of the scaffolding, where fall risks are often underestimated;
* guardrails for access points and trapdoors, which secure movement between levels.
The most important consideration is to choose guardrails that are compatible with the scaffolding system being used. Each manufacturer designs its accessories to work with its own components.

Best practices for installation and use

Guardrails provide protection only when they are correctly installed and kept in place:
* install guardrails before allowing teams to access a level, never afterwards;
* check that every rail and toe board is securely locked in place before use;
* never use a guardrail as a handhold to climb up or as an attachment point for heavy equipment;
* immediately reinstall any component removed to allow materials to pass through;
* regularly inspect all components for damage, including deformation, corrosion and looseness in the fixings.

The most common mistakes

Several unsafe practices are regularly observed on construction sites:
* leaving a level unprotected at the end of the day because “we’ll be back tomorrow”;
* replacing a guardrail with a plank or makeshift rope;
* forgetting the ends of the scaffolding, leaving them without return guardrails;
* using damaged equipment to save money or because an immediate replacement is unavailable;
* mixing components from different scaffolding systems, which can compromise the strength and stability of the entire structure.

A safety component to include when ordering scaffolding

Guardrails are not an optional extra; they are an integral part of a scaffolding system. Including them in the initial order and ensuring there are enough to protect every level and every exposed side helps avoid last-minute compromises and ensures complete protection from the very first day on site.

At Alchary, we offer complete scaffolding systems and their safety accessories, including guardrails, toe boards and platforms with access trapdoors. These products are available for purchase to suit the duration and requirements of your construction projects.
