Project Description
The Sfax seawater desalination plant project aims to bolster the region’s drinking water supply by meeting the population’s growing needs. It will help improve residents’ living conditions while supporting the region’s economic and social development.
Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)—a key partner in Tunisia’s water sector—the project is backed by a loan of 36.676 billion yen (approximately 800 million Tunisian dinars). The future plant will have a production capacity of 100,000 m³ of desalinated water per day—expandable to 200,000 m³ per day—thereby ensuring a drinking water supply for around 600,000 residents.
Since construction began in April 2022, the project has seen steady progress, achieving significant milestones. It is scheduled to come online in 2024, marking a major step toward securing sustainable water resources for the Sfax region.
