Setting up scaffolding is an essential operation in the construction sector, but also one of the most sensitive in terms of safety. Every year, many serious or fatal accidents occur as a result of incorrect installation or lack of vigilance. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, it is essential to follow a rigorous method that complies with the regulations. In this article, we explain to you how to mount a scaffolding according to the rules of art, step by step.
Before starting the assembly, it is crucial to analyze the terrain on which the scaffolding will be installed. Unstable, sloping or uneven ground is a major hazard for the entire structure. That’s why it’s important to make sure the soil is well
When deciding to mount scaffolding, you need to think about the safety not only of fitters but also of the general public. The installation of scaffolding can represent a danger if it is done by the roadside, on a sidewalk or in a busy environment. It is then necessary to take concrete measures to limit the risks. This involves the installation of barriers, of road signs, or even the temporary closure of a public access. It is also advisable to plan operations at times when attendance is reduced, such as early in the morning, late at night or during the weekend. Setting up a scaffolding in an urban environment therefore involves logistical anticipation and perfect coordination with the local authorities if necessary.
Once the scaffolding is mounted, it is not enough to leave it in place unattended. Security requires a daily inspection, carried out by a competent person. This check covers all the essential elements of the structure: floors, baseboards, studs, fasteners, pins, braces. It is about detecting any anomaly, such as loose parts, corrosion or premature wear. Setting up a scaffolding in the rules also requires maintaining an inspection log where all observations are recorded. This daily monitoring allows to ensure a continuous use in complete safety, while respecting the regulatory obligations.
One cannot mount scaffolding without having the necessary technical skills. In France, as in the majority of European countries, legislation imposes mandatory training on fitters. It must be updated every five years to remain valid. The team leader responsible for supervising operations must also be trained and certified to ensure compliance with current safety standards. This requirement ensures that the assembly, use and disassembly of the scaffolding is done in optimal conditions.
